SHELL MILEAGE MARATHON

From 1996 to 1998

The principle of the Shell mileage marathon events is to cover the a maximum of
distance with a minimum of fuel with a 3 or 4 wheel vehicle. This events are open to all
mechanic and automobile enthusiasts and particularly to engineering school, university...
In Europe, there is 4 events :

-- in France (at Paul Ricard track) early in June
-- in Belgium (in Bruxelles) early in July
-- in England (at Silverstone track) middle of July
-- in Finland (in Nokia) at the end of August

The team INPG Sports Mécaniques was created in order to group the skills of the
INPG students in different fields (mechanic, electronic, electricity, computer science,...)
This team had a vehicle since 1992, "Evolution" :

Evolution

In this team, my role was to manage technical projects on this car and in the design
of a new vehicle, "Revolution", more modern :

Revolution

This vehicle possess a chassis made with sandwich carbon-honeycomb while
Evolution had a tubular chassis (carbon tubes) and a carbon bodywork. On Revolution,
the chassis is also the bodywork of the vehicle. Such a technical choice is to
combine rigidity and lightness. The design of this vehicle began in October 1996.
"Revolution has done its first test in July 1997 for the English event at Silverstone.
All stages of the building of the vehicle are detailed in the INPG Sports Mecaniques
site (link at the bottom of the page).

The engine

"Revolution" possess also a new engine wich was my study project at the ENSHMG.

I have design and manufacture this engine from september 1996 to
April 1997. It is currently in a development period
these are its main technical characteristics:

type :                                                monocylinder, 4 strokes
cylinder bore :                                    32 mm
stroke :                                             33 mm
capacity :                                          26.5 cc
compression rate:                              13
fuel supply:                                        électronic sequential programmable injection
ignition :                                            électronic, 2 spark plugs
distribution :                                       2 over head camshaft
cooling system:                                 by water
lubrication :                                       dry crankcase
power :                                              1 hp at 4500 rpm
torque:                                              2 N.m at 3000 rpm

The only pieces wich I have not conceived and manufactured are the
piston, the exhaust valve and the crankcase.

Results

The best results of the team INPG Sports Mécaniques were done in
July 1998 in England (Silverstone) :

-- Revolution has covered 1014 km with one liter of fuel
    (16/120 teams)

-- Evolution has covered 1008 km with one liter of fuel
    (17/120 teams)

I want to add that Revolution is able of better results and without problems
during the race, it must outdistance Evolution wich engine is at the top of
its development.
